IT'S HARD TO SEE A LANDSCAPE OF BUDGET CUTS WHERE CLASS SIZES CAN BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL.
REGARDING OUR LOWEST PAID STAFF, THE MINIMUM WAGE IS A MERE $15.25.
IN CONTRAST TO AUSTIN ISD, WHERE IT IS $20.25, A FULL $5 MORE.

AND THE LAST ONE, HOUSE BILL 500, WHICH IS THE SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION.
THIS THIS SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION HAS A LOT OF STUFF IN IT, BUT WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT TO US IT HAS A SCHOOL HEALTH AND RELATED SERVICES ALLOCATION FOR SHARS TO OFFSET THE LOST REVENUE THAT DISTRICTS LOST WITH THAT CHANGE AND HOW YOU CALCULATE THE SHARS.
THE TOTAL APPROPRIATION IN THAT SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATIONS $ 935 MILLION.
WE LOST $8.8 MILLION SO WE'RE HOPING WE GET OUR $8 MILLION BACK.
LIKE IS IT LIKE WHATEVER YOU LOSE, WHATEVER YOU LOST, YOU GET BACK OR IS IT A PORTION OF IT? WE DON'T KNOW. WE KNOW THE STATE LOST OVER $900 MILLION, SO WE ASSUME IT WILL BE A DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR PRETTY MUCH.

WE'VE SEEN A LOT OF NEWCOMERS. MANY OF THEM NEED SOME EXTRA SUPPORT WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR BECOMING MORE PROFICIENT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. SO WE HAVE TO PROVIDE THOSE SERVICES AND THAT SUPPORT ALSO TO THEM AND THUS, YOU KNOW, WE CUT BY WHAT IS IT, 3.6 FOR THE POSITION DECREASES.
JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY WAS AWARE THAT THIS IS ALL A MODEL.

AND THEN WE GOT AN INCREASE FROM WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR THE PEOPLE TO PICK UP THE TRASH.
THE CONTRACT IS GOING UP FOR ABOUT $149,000. SO WE HAD TO ADD $548,000 TO CUSTODIAL SERVICES.
OUR JAEP CONTRACT IS GOING UP BY $50,000, AND WE HAVE TO DO A SAFETY AND SECURITY REPORT IS MANDATED THAT YOU DO ONE EVERY THREE YEARS.
THAT'S GOING TO COST THE DISTRICT ABOUT $51,000.
SO I ALSO HAVE A LIST OF ALL THOSE AND I WILL SHARE THOSE WITH THE BOARD.

THE COMPENSATION INCREASE BASED ON THE LEGISLATURE, MEANING WE HAVE TO DO 40% OF THE INCREASE, HAS TO GO TO COMPENSATION, AND 75% OF THAT HAS TO GO TO TEACHERS.
AND AT THE TIME THAT WE'VE DONE THIS PROJECTION, IT WAS JUST CLASSROOM TEACHERS, NOT THE OTHER CATEGORIES THAT ARE NOW INCLUDED IN TEACHERS. SO THAT THAT WOULD BE A CHANGE THAT COME LATER.

BUT SO WE ENDED UP DOING 4% FOR 10 PLUS 3% FROM 5 TO 9 YEARS AND 2% FROM 1 TO 4, 0 TO 4 AND THEN ALL OTHER STAFF MEMBERS ONE AND A HALF THAT GOT US IS STILL ABOVE THE 40% FOR COMPENSATION. SO WE, WE STARTED KIND OF TALKING ABOUT A COUPLE OF THINGS AND THROWING AROUND A COUPLE OF IDEAS.
SO PRESENTATION AROUND BOARD VISION AND BOARD GOALS FOR STAFF.
THE OVERARCHING OBJECTIVE IS TO CLARIFY, LIKE WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A SCHOOL BOARD AND HOW DOES THAT DIFFERENTIATE FROM THE ROLE OF ADMINISTRATION? WE'RE WONDERING IF THERE ARE ANY OPPORTUNITIES TO PIGGYBACK ON OTHER OPPORTUNITIES OR THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING ON A CAMPUS WHERE THE BOARD CAN BE PRESENT AND HAVE SOME TWO -WAY COMMUNICATION. AND THEN COULD WE DO SOMETHING AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR? SO COULD WE DO LISTENING SESSIONS OR COMMUNITY CIRCLES AT THE BACK TO SCHOOL CONFERENCE? SO THOSE ARE JUST SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE THREW AROUND.
SOME QUESTIONS THAT CAME UP WITH THAT IS, IS THAT THE DISTRICT ADVISORY COUNCIL, DOES THAT ALREADY EXIST? HOW DO WE FEEL ABOUT ASKING TEACHERS FOR MORE TIME AND UNPAID LABOR? AND WHEN WE'VE LOOKED A LOT INTO SOME OF THE STUDENT GROUPS AND SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE REALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH IN OTHER DISTRICTS ABOUT, YOU KNOW, SIMILAR TO LIKE OUR VOICE OR WHATEVER.
THAT CREATING THAT WITHIN TEACHERS. AND THAT'S KIND OF WHERE BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF EVERY SINGLE BOARD MEETING, WE'RE LIKE, WELL, WHAT'S TEACHER FEEDBACK? WELL, WE DON'T REALLY HAVE A STRUCTURED WAY, A PUBLIC WAY OF PROVIDING THAT.
THEY CAN GIVE IT TO US PRIVATELY ALL THE TIME THROUGH EMAIL, WHICH IS WONDERFUL.
BUT I THINK THAT PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY IS NEEDED.

AND SO IS THIS SOMETHING THAT TALKED ABOUT A LOT WHEN I WAS BOARD PRESIDENT ON HOW TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN? BUT IF WE NEED IT, I THINK WE COULD JUST MAKE AN AGENDA REQUEST AND BRING IT TO THE BOARD, AND WE COULD ALL WORK TOGETHER ON WHAT WHAT WOULD ACTUALLY QUALIFY FOR RECOGNITIONS IN TERMS OF APPLYING IT TO STUDENT OUTCOMES? BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE WE MISS A LOT OF AMAZING ELEMENTARY KIDS, BUT BECAUSE OF THE WAY OUR POLICY IS, THEY HAVE TO HIT A NATIONAL OR A STATEWIDE TOP THREE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
AND THAT'S REALLY THERE'S NOT A WHOLE LOT OF STATEWIDE COMPETITIONS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.
AND SO I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A CHANGE IN THAT. BUT WE MAY NEED SOME FEEDBACK FROM ADMINISTRATION TO HELP US NARROW DOWN WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL. AND NOT EVEN ELEMENTARY, BUT ALL LEVELS AS IT APPLIES TO STUDENT OUTCOMES.
WE DEFINITELY CAN LOOK INTO IT, AND I THINK WE'RE JUST GOING TO BE IN ADDITION, NOT ONLY CHANGE BUT ADD, RIGHT. SO BECAUSE WE ALREADY HAVE THE THE OTHER LIKE YOU JUST MENTIONED THE STATE AND AND NATIONAL COMPETITION QUALIFIERS AND FINALISTS WHATEVER.

WE HAVE TRAVELED ALL OVER THE STATE TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS ALONG THE BORDER OUT IN EL PASO TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE SAN ANTONIO AREA THAT AREN'T ALLOWED TO CALL FOR BONDS BECAUSE THEY ARE ON FEDERAL LAND TO BACK IN THE MOTHERLAND IN BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION.
THAT WAS PRETTY AMAZING. BUT IT HAS OPENED MY EYES TO OUTSIDE OF JUST ROUND ROCK ISD, AND WE'RE DOING SOME PRETTY AMAZING THINGS AND SO ARE DISTRICTS AROUND THE STATE. A LITTLE BIT OF A COMMERCIAL, IF ANYBODY TRUSTEE WEIR IS ALREADY A GRADUATE OF MASTER TRUSTEE.
