THE BAND HAD TO PLACE IN THE UIL REGIONAL COMPETITION TO EARN A SLOT IN THE AREA CONTEST, WHERE THEY COMPETE AGAINST FIVE DIFFERENT REGIONS TO EARN A SPOT AT THE STATE COMPETITION. DURING THE STATE COMPETITION AND PRELIMINARY ROUNDS, BANDS ARE SCORED BY FIVE JUDGES, WITH THREE GRADING THE MUSICAL PERFORMANCES AND THE REMAINING TWO SCORING THE CHOREOGRAPHED MARCHES. A NICE ELEMENT OF THAT PROGRAM IS AT THE END OF IT THE STUDENTS GET BOTH A UT GRADE AND A ROUND ROCK, ANY OF OUR FIVE HIGH SCHOOL, GRADE, AND THEN THE STUDENT CAN ACTUALLY DECIDE IF THEY'RE GOING TO KEEP THAT UT GRADE OR NOT. SO IF THEY'RE THINKING TOWARDS THEIR FUTURE, THEY CAN KEEP THAT GRADE. MOST OF THE TIME THEY DO BECAUSE IT'S MUCH MORE FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE. OR MAYBE IF YOU'RE FISCALLY MINDED, IT'S BETTER TO GET THOSE COLLEGE CREDITS HERE IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT IS IN COLLEGE. ANOTHER WAY TO EARN A DUAL CREDIT COURSE OR I'M SORRY, MY CREDIT IS THROUGH A DUAL CREDIT COURSE COMPLETION. NOW WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO COLLECT THEIR ENLISTMENT FORM, THEIR DD FORM, I BELIEVE IT IS, TO GET THAT INDICATOR. BUT WE'RE ALREADY THINKING THROUGH LOGISTICALLY SOME DIFFERENT WAYS THAT WE'RE GOING TO ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY TO HELP GET THOSE ENLISTMENT FORMS BACK FROM STUDENTS AFTER THEY GRADUATE FROM US AND ENLIST. I'M JUST GOING TO ADD OUR BOARD MEMBERS, I KNOW I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER, WE HAD THIS CONVERSATION OR HAVE ONE OF OUR CONSULTANT DID SOME PRESENTATION ABOUT THE POSSIBLE CHANGES TO THE ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM. SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WILL MOST LIKELY BE CHANGING IS CCMR . SO HE STILL DID NOT MAKE UP HIS MIND YET. SO THERE ARE A LOT OF UNKNOWNS AS FAR AS HOW THIS WILL LOOK LIKE AND HOW THIS WILL IMPACT NOT JUST OUR SYSTEM, OUR DATA HERE IN ROUND ROCK ISD, BUT ALSO ACROSS THE STATE. SO WE'RE STILL WAITING ON THAT INFORMATION. BUT I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, CHANGE IS COMING AND WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS. AZAIEZ MENTIONED, WE ARE EXPECTING SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO EVERYTHING FROM TEST SCORES TO HOW DIFFERENT METRICS ARE ACTUALLY COUNTED WITHIN THE ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM. SO AS WE GO THROUGH THE SPRING, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO HEAR ABOUT SEVERAL CHANGES THAT ARE GOING TO INFLUENCE MANY OF THESE PRESENTATIONS. SO JUST A REMINDER OF OUR OVERALL GOAL FOR 2023 IS THAT 88% AND ONE THING I DO WANT TO MENTION, TOO, IS WE ALWAYS HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT CCMR IS A LAGGING INDICATOR, SO IT GETS A LITTLE CONFUSING. BUT THE ACTUAL STUDENTS WHO COUNT FOR THIS YEAR'S ACCOUNTABILITY, SO OUR 2022-2023 ACCOUNTABILITY OR LAST YEAR'S GRADUATES. SO THE 2022 GRADUATES ACCOUNT FOR THE 2023 ACCOUNTABILITY. AND AS DR. AZAIEZ MENTIONED, THERE'S SIGNIFICANT CHANGES COMING TO THE CCMR , AS WELL AS OTHER ELEMENTS OF ACCOUNTABILITY. THAT IS, WE DON'T KNOW FOR SURE, BUT IT IS DEFINITELY LOOKING LIKE THAT'S GOING TO COUNT CURRENTLY, WHICH MEANS THE NEW EXPECTATIONS ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO APPLY TO LAST YEAR'S GRADUATES. SO THERE'S OBVIOUSLY NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT LAST YEAR'S GRADUATES. SO WE'RE STILL WAITING TO SEE HOW IF THAT'S GOING TO COME OUT THAT WAY OR NOT. BUT JUST THIS DATA TABLE HERE JUST WANTED TO SHOW, OF COURSE, THIS YEAR'S GOAL IS TO GET TO 88 ACROSS THE BOARD. LOOKING AT OUR ACCOUNTABILITY PREVIEW FOR LAST YEAR'S GRADUATES, WE WERE AT AT 79. NOW THAT NUMBER STILL MOVES A TINY BIT. I DOUBT IT'LL MOVE A WHOLE PERCENT BECAUSE WE CONTINUE TO GET DATA ALMOST THROUGH SPRING BREAK OF THIS YEAR FOR LAST YEAR'S GRADUATES UNTIL WE GET THAT FINAL, FINAL METRIC. BUT I DO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT LAST COLUMN IS OUR CURRENT STUDENTS SITTING IN SEATS AS OF TODAY. SO RIGHT NOW WE'RE AT 73% DISTRICT WIDE FOR ALL STUDENTS. AND YOU CAN SEE WHERE WE ARE WITH THE DIFFERENT STUDENT GROUPS. THAT OBVIOUSLY IS THE NUMBER WE HAVE MUCH MORE CONTROL OVER BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE THOSE STUDENTS. AND I'M GOING TO TALK QUITE A BIT TONIGHT ABOUT DIFFERENT WAYS THAT WE'RE WORKING TOGETHER TO ASSIST CAMPUSES AND MONITORING AND HELPING THOSE STUDENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, JUST TO ADD TO WHAT RYAN IS SAYING. FOR EXAMPLE, WE MAY HAVE SOME STUDENTS TAKING AN AP COURSE RIGHT NOW, BUT BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T TAKE THE AP TEST, BECAUSE, REMEMBER, THEY HAVE TO EARN A THREE OR HIGHER, NOT JUST SIT LIKE IN THE CLASS, BUT ALSO TAKE THE TEST AND SCORE THREE OR HIGHER IN ORDER FOR THEM TO EARN THAT THAT CCMAR CREDIT. SO THAT'S WHY SOME OF THOSE NUMBERS, WE EXPECT THOSE NUMBERS TO BE OBVIOUSLY A LOT HIGHER THAN THAT ONCE OUR STUDENTS ACTUALLY COMPLETE THE COURSE, TAKE THE TEST, SCORE THREE OR [01:15:08] HIGHER, AND THAT HOPEFULLY THAT WILL BOOST OUR NUMBERS, AMONG OTHER THINGS. BUT AP IS ONE OF THOSE. WE ALSO HAVE UT ONRAMP COURSES, DUAL CREDIT COURSES THAT OUR STUDENTS THEY ENROLL AND AGAIN, THEY HAVE TO ALSO MAKE SURE THAT TO COMPLETE THE COURSE, PASS THE CLASS, EARN THE COLLEGE CREDIT IN ORDER FOR THEM TO EARN THAT CCMR ALSO. YEAH, AGAIN, TONIGHT'S JUST AN UPDATE. WE SEE THAT THE NUMBER MOVES A LOT IN THE SPRING. YOU KNOW STUDENTS ARE TAKING TSI 2, A LOT OF THEM DOING IT THIS WEEK AND THEN THEY'LL CONTINUE TO DO THAT. AND IN TERMS OF IF WE CAN ALL UNDERSTAND. SO IN THE LAST ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM, ESSENTIALLY IF A CAMPUS GOT THEIR CCMR NUMBER TO A 60%, THEN THAT WAS SCALE UP TO AN A. AND IN DOMAIN 1. REMEMBER, DOMAIN 1 IS ALL ABOUT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. SO IF YOU'RE ON AND I'M TALKING ABOUT DOMAIN 1 AND THE ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM. SO THERE'S FOUR DIFFERENT, THREE DIFFERENT DOMAINS. IN HIGH SCHOOL, 40% OF THAT DOMAIN 1 SCORE IS ACTUALLY YOUR CCMR RATING. SO AT A HIGH SCHOOL, YOU CAN GET AN A IN YOUR CCMR RATING AND 40% OF THAT DOMAIN SCORE CAN KIND OF OFFSET SOMETIMES SOME OF YOUR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. MOVING FORWARD IT DEFINITELY LOOKS LIKE THAT SKILL SCORE OR THAT THAT EXPECTATION IS GOING TO RAISE FROM A 60 TO AN 88. SO IN ORDER TO EARN AN 88, I'M SORRY TO EARN AN A IN THE 40% OF YOUR DOMAIN 1 SCORE, A HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS WILL HAVE TO GET THEIR CCMR NUMBER UP TO AN 88. SIGNIFICANT CHANGE, OBVIOUSLY HAVING LOTS OF RIPPLES THROUGHOUT THE STATE. LOOKING AT STATEWIDE DATA, THIS WOULD ESSENTIALLY TAKE FROM AROUND 70% OF HIGH SCHOOLS ACROSS THE STATE, EARNING AN A DOWN TO ABOUT 20% OF HIGH SCHOOLS EARNING AN A IN CCMR . THE WAY THAT A LOT OF THE THINKING AROUND THAT IS EXPLAINED TO US IS THAT, YOU KNOW, THE MORE THE HIGHER THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WE SEND TO COLLEGE THAT ARE HAVE MET ONE OF THESE METRICS, THE HIGHER NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING TO PERSIST THROUGHOUT COLLEGE. SO THAT MAKES SENSE, YOU KNOW, BUT I DO WORRY SOMETIMES WHEN WE TALK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHAT IS K-12 HAVE THE MOST INFLUENCE OVER? DO WE HAVE THE MOST INFLUENCE OVER READINESS ON GETTING KIDS READY TO GO TO COLLEGE, OR DO WE HAVE THE MOST INFLUENCE ON THEM PERSISTING THROUGHOUT THEIR COLLEGE CAREER? SO IN MY MIND, WE ARE, WE GET THEM READY. HIGHER ED HELPS THEM PERSIST THROUGH. BUT THAT'S NOT ALWAYS THE WAY THAT TEA IS LOOKING AT IT WHEN TRYING TO RAISE THAT NUMBER. SO EITHER WAY, OUR HIGH SCHOOLS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO EARN THE SAME DOMAIN 1 SCORE, THEIR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT NUMBER IS GOING TO HAVE TO GO UP BECAUSE THE DOMAIN 1 40% OF IT FOR CMAR IS GOING TO BE A LOT HARDER TO GET AN A IN THAT PORTION. SOME OTHER CHANGES PHASE IN OF THE NEW STANDARD RELATED INDUSTRY BASED CERTIFICATIONS. SO IN THE PAST YOU COULD TAKE AN IBC. WE'VE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THAT LAST YEAR. WE'LL TALK MORE ABOUT THAT AND ONE OF OUR GPM UPDATES IN THE SPRING. YOU COULD JUST TAKE ONE OF THE IBCS AND ESSENTIALLY THAT WOULD BE A WAY THAT YOU COULD HIT YOUR CCMR INDICATOR. STARTING THIS YEAR, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PASS ONE OF THE INDUSTRY BASED CERTIFICATIONS AND YOU'LL HAVE TO BE ENROLLED IN AT LEAST A LEVEL TWO COURSE IN THAT PATHWAY. NEXT YEAR, THE WAY THEY'RE EXPLAINING IT RIGHT NOW IS YOU'LL HAVE TO PASS THE CERTIFICATION AND AT LEAST BE A CONCENTRATOR IN THAT PATHWAY, MEANING I BELIEVE IT'S THREE COURSES, THREE COURSES THAT YOU HAVE TO, DON'T QUOTE ME, TWO OR THREE COURSES IN THAT PATHWAY THAT YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE. AND THEN THE PHASE IN OF THAT IS IN THE YEAR AFTER THAT, IT WILL BE LOOKING AT YOU HAVE TO PASS THE INDUSTRY BASED CERTIFICATION AND COMPLETE THE PATHWAY WITHIN CTE IN ORDER TO EAT THAT, MEET THAT INDICATOR. SO MUCH MORE, MUCH MORE RIGOROUS, LESS OF JUST TAKE ONE TEST AND GET THE INDICATOR. THERE'S ALSO BEEN A LOT OF CHANGES IN THE IBCS OF WHAT COUNTS, WHAT DOESN'T. SOME OF THE IBCS THAT MANY, MANY STUDENTS, NOT A TON HERE ROUND ROCK BUT ACROSS THE STATE WERE TAKING SOME OF THOSE ARE NOT GOING TO COUNT. THE MICROSOFT OFFICE WAS ONE OF THEM. THERE'S A LIST, BUT I DON'T HAVE IT IN FRONT OF ME. BUT THE IBC LIST ESSENTIALLY HAS CHANGED A COUPLE OF TIMES AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE UPDATED. AND THEN THE FINAL UPDATE THAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT IS UPDATES AROUND THAT REQUIREMENT FOR THE COLLEGE PREP, ENGLISH AND MATH COURSE. SO RIGHT NOW WE PARTNER WITH ACC ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COLLEGE PREP, ENGLISH AND MATH. STATES LOOKING AT STANDARDIZING THAT ACROSS THE ACROSS THE STATE, BECAUSE I THINK EACH DISTRICT KIND OF HAS DIFFERENT MOUS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH DIFFERENT HIGHER ED PARTNERS AND THEY'RE LOOKING TO HAVE SOME CONSISTENCY THERE. I DON'T ANTICIPATE THAT BEING A BIG, BIG DEAL FOR US, BUT IT'S JUST ONE OF THE CHANGES THAT IS UNDERWAY. NEXT SLIDE IS WHAT I TALKED ABOUT BEFORE THE SLIDE DECK WAS UP. AND CCMR REALLY TOOK A HIT WHEN WHEN COVID HIT AT THE SAME TIME IT HIT. IT HAD SUCH AN IMPACT ON OUR SYSTEMS AND CCMR IS A LOT ABOUT SYSTEMS MONITORING SYSTEMS. GET KIDS IN THE RIGHT COURSES, ALL THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. SO I THINK WE'RE COMING OUT THE OTHER END. I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE NEW MONITORING SYSTEMS WE'VE PUT IN PLACE THAT I THINK ARE GOING TO HELP US GET BACK ON ON THAT GROWTH TRAJECTORY. BUT I THINK WE WERE LIKE I SAID, WE WERE ON WE WERE ON A GOOD TRACK FORWARD AND WE'RE GOING TO GET BACK THERE. BUT WE DEFINITELY DID SEE A LOT OF DISRUPTION IN THAT 2020 AND 2021 DATA COINCIDING WITH THE PANDEMIC. WE TYPICALLY SEE THAT IN THE SPRING AS MORE AND MORE OF OUR SENIORS MEET THAT NUMBER, BUT DID WANT TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE. A GOOD REASON TO PROVIDE THIS UPDATE RIGHT NOW, TOO, IS WE CAN AS LONG AS WE STAY CONSISTENT WITH OUR MONITORING CALENDAR, THEN WE CAN HAVE A GOOD MIDYEAR MIDDLE OF YEAR CHECK. THEY DIDN'T SEE THAT CORRELATED CLOSE TO CLOSING THE GAP. BUT WHEN THEY DID THAT CORRELATION AND ROUND ROCK ISD, THEY DID FIND THAT ECONOMIC DISADVANTAGE WAS CORRELATED, THAT WE DIDN'T CLOSE THE GAP. AND WHEN I LOOKED AT THIS, YOU LOOK AT THE ECONOMIC DISADVANTAGE AND THEY'RE THE THIRD LOWEST SCORE, I BELIEVE, ON THIS GRAPH ONLY BEHIND THE EMERGENT BILINGUAL AND THE SPECIAL ED. AND THEN YOU HAVE THE ECONOMIC DISADVANTAGED. I GUESS THIS IS JUST CONCERNING TO ME THAT IF YOU'RE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED IN ROUND ROCK ISD, THAT IT AGAIN IS JUST DEMONSTRATING THAT, YOU KNOW, MAYBE THERE'S SOMETHING HERE THAT WE REALLY NEED TO FOCUS ON THESE KIDS. AND I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS, YOU KNOW, CAMPUS DRIVEN. I UNDERSTAND THE MATH, BUT I THINK THIS IS BEYOND MATH BECAUSE THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ECONOMIC STATUS THAT CAN BE CORRELATED IN ROUND ROCK ISD TO YOUR [01:40:10] SUCCESS, NOT ONLY IN CLOSING THE GAP, BUT NOW INTO IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE CCMR READY. SO I GUESS I WOULD JUST ASK MY OTHER COLLEAGUES, I THINK WE NEED TO DIG INTO THIS. I KNOW WE'VE BEEN REALLY CONCERNED WITH SPED, WHICH I AM TOO, BECAUSE YOU'LL SEE HERE THAT THAT'S ACTUALLY CORRELATED PRETTY LOW THERE. BUT ECONOMIC DISADVANTAGED IS ONE THAT I'M REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT. AND LET ME JUST SAY THAT I AGREE WITH YOU, DR. BONE. I THINK HISTORICALLY IN THIS DISTRICT, IT'S NOTHING NEW. I THINK AT THIS BOARD AND I'M SUPER PROUD TO BE PART OF THIS TEAM, THIS BOARD, SINCE I GOT HERE, THEY MADE IT VERY CLEAR TO ME THAT CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP AND ACROSS THE BOARD, NOT JUST IN CCMR, IT'S A PRIORITY. AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. I THINK OUR STUDENT GROUPS, MANY OF THEM, INCLUDING A LOW ECONOMIC DISADVANTAGED, THEY NEED A LOT MORE ATTENTION FROM OUR SIDE. AND AGAIN, I'M PROUD TO BE PART OF THIS TEAM BECAUSE WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN AND IS A PRIORITY FOR US. BUT AS YOU KNOW, SOMETHING HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. IT'S GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE A LOT OF WORK TO TURN IT AROUND. IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT COULD BE DONE OVERNIGHT, ALTHOUGH WE SHOULD HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY. BUT IT JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PUT SYSTEM IN PLACE AND NOTIFY THE ROOT CAUSES AND THEN DEVELOP LIKE SOME ACTION PLANNING TO ADDRESS THEM. BUT I AGREE TOTALLY WITH YOU, AND I THINK IT'S A PRIORITY FOR ALL OF US. YEAH, I AGREE. THE ONE THING I WOULD SAY IS THAT WITH ANY SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THESE ARE PEOPLE AND WE HAVE SENIORS THAT ARE AT THE CUSP OF OF LEAVING OUR DOORS AND GOING OUT INTO THE REAL WORLD WITH REAL CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR FUTURE, THAT WE REALLY TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THEIR EDUCATION AND THAT WE MAKE SURE THAT 53% IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THESE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED. AND, YOU KNOW, START WITH THE SENIORS. YOU KNOW, IS THERE SOMETHING WE CAN DO IN THE NEXT SIX MONTHS TO GIVE THEM THE BOOST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE READY, YOU KNOW, FOCUS ON THIS GROUP. IT'S DEFINITELY, AS I REMEMBER, THE 53% AND I KNOW LAST YEAR WAS 66 AT THE END OF THE YEAR. BUT, AND THAT'S NOT I'M NOT SAYING THAT'S WHERE WE WANT TO BE EITHER. BUT WE JUST NEED TO REMEMBER 53% IS WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. THAT NUMBER IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE SPRING. MY BELIEVE THAT NUMBER SHOULD BE HIGHER GOING IN. AND PART OF THAT IS WHAT DR. NICHOLS WAS MENTIONING AS WELL. LIKE WE WANT KIDS TO MEET THIS INDICATOR EARLIER IN THEIR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER. AND THE WAY WE'RE GOING TO DO THAT IS CONTINUING TO PUSH THEM IN MEETING THAT INDICATOR IN MATH AND READING AND NOT NECESSARILY SOME OF THE, LIKE THAT'S A THAT'S AN INDICATOR YOU CAN HIT REAL EARLY IN YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON. I THINK. AZAIEZ, I MAY HAVE RECALLED, EVEN IN YOUR LAST DISTRICT, STARTING TO DO SOME OF THIS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. THAT'S RIGHT. AND SO, I MEAN, WHATEVER WE HAVE TO DO, I JUST IT'S REALLY DISAPPOINTING TO SEE SUCH A HIGH ACHIEVING DISTRICT LIKE OURS WHERE WE'RE JUST REALLY NOT MEETING THE NEEDS OF THIS ONE GROUP OVER AND OVER AGAIN. NO, ABSOLUTELY. DOCTOR BONE. I THINK I'M 100% WITH YOU ON THIS, AND I WANT YOU TO KNOW WE ARE COMMITTED. I KNOW TRUSTEE WESTON WAS TALKING ABOUT THE MATH AND WHAT DR. YOU KNOW, I LOOK AT SLIDE FOUR AND ALMOST EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE CRITERIA HAS TO DO WITH SOMEBODY WHO'S LOOKING TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION AND ACT AND SAT AND ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE, AP EXAMS, ONRAMPS CLASS, DUAL CREDIT. I MEAN, WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS FOR MEASURING CAREER READINESS FOR STUDENTS WHO DON'T SEE COLLEGE AS AN OPTION OR THIS POPULATION WE'RE TALKING ABOUT OUR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS WHO, YOU KNOW, COLLEGE FINANCIALLY, YOU KNOW, MAYBE THEY WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE, BUT FINANCIALLY IT'S NOT AN OPTION. SO, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT, LIKE THAT IS CONCERNING TO ME OF HOW DO WE GET THESE KIDS MEASURED IF THEY DON'T, EVEN IF THEY DON'T WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE. MAYBE IT DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MONEY OR HAVING THE FINANCES TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT OR NOT. BUT I LOOK AT THAT CCMR INDICATOR AND SO MUCH OF IT IS HEAVILY WEIGHTED ON ARE YOU GOING TO GO TO COLLEGE? SO WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS FOR THAT KID THAT DOESN'T WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE? AND THERE'S NO REASON THAT THEY HAVE PERSONALLY MOTIVATED TO DO WELL ON THE TSI. THEY DON'T CARE. SO WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS TO MEASURE HOW WELL THOSE KIDS ARE OR ARE THERE ANY OTHER OPTIONS? AND SO I'LL GO AHEAD AND ANSWER THAT AND I'LL START WITH AN APOLOGY. WE TYPICALLY USE THE TERM COLLEGE READINESS, BUT I WISH WE DIDN'T AND WE JUST SAID FUTURE READINESS. AND HERE'S THE REASON WHY. WHETHER I CHOOSE TO GO INTO THE WORLD OF WORK, I CHOOSE TO GO INTO THE MILITARY OR I CHOOSE TO GO TO COLLEGE, ALL THESE DIFFERENT SKILLS AND THINGS YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO. YOU STILL NEED THAT SKILL. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KNEW ME BEFORE I EVEN WENT TO COLLEGE, I WENT INTO THE MILITARY. I WAS AN AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION MECHANIC. YOU TAKE SOMETHING CALLED THE ASVAB. WHEN YOU TAKE THAT TEST, YOU'RE MEASURED IN A WHOLE BUNCH OF DIFFERENT THINGS. YOUR ABILITY TO ACCESS A JOB AND JOBS THAT TAKE HIGHER LEVELS OF THINKING AND WORK IS DEPENDENT ON HOW WELL YOU SCORE. THEY TEST YOU ON MATH, ON WRITING, ON READING. YOU'RE CONSTANTLY ALWAYS HAVING TO SHOW SKILL SET IN THOSE THINGS REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU GO. SO I WISH WE ALMOST WOULDN'T USE THAT TERM BECAUSE I THINK IT GIVES THE FALSE IMPRESSION THAT THE ONLY WHERE PLACE TO GO WITH THAT IS COLLEGE. THESE ARE SKILLS, REGARDLESS OF THE ROUTE YOU TAKE, ARE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF OUR STUDENTS. AND SO WE SHOULD ALMOST PROBABLY CALL IT THAT DEPARTMENT IS CALLED FUTURE READINESS. CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE, BECAUSE I THINK IT GIVES THE IMPRESSION THAT WE ONLY CARE ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT YOU GO TO COLLEGE WHEN YOU REALLY NEED THIS. WHICHEVER ROUTE YOU GO IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO DO WELL. IF I GO INTO THE WORLD OF WORK, MY ABILITY TO WRITE AND MY ABILITY TO ASCEND WITHIN THAT JOB PATH IS DEPENDENT ON MY ABILITY TO SPEAK WELL, MY ABILITY TO WRITE, MY ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE, AND DEPENDING ON THE JOB, EVEN MY ABILITY TO DO MATH. AND WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO HAVE THAT WHAT WE WOULD CONSIDER THAT BASIC SKILL WHEREVER THEY GO. WE DON'T WANT TO DECIDE WHAT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO. WE WANT THEM TO LEAVE US AND THEY GET TO CHOOSE WHERE THEY WANT TO GO. IF THEY DON'T, IF COLLEGE IS NOT IT, THEN IT'S NOT IT. BUT WE WANT THEM TO HAVE THE SKILL TO DO WELL WITH, IN EITHER ONE OF THOSE ROUTES. SO IS THE WAY TO MEASURE THAT, THE TSI? IF, I MEAN, I TOTALLY GET WHAT YOU'RE SAYING AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU, BUT IF YOU HAVE A KIDDO THAT DOESN'T HAVE PLANS TO GO TO COLLEGE, ARE THEY GOING TO BE IN THE AP COURSES, ARE THEY GOING TO BE TAKING THE ONRAMPS? THEY DON'T HAVE TO GO INTO THE AP COURSE, BUT IT MIGHT BE THAT THEY STILL NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ AND WRITE WELL. SO IF I GO TO A JOB, IT STILL MEASURES MY ABILITY TO READ WELL, TO WRITE WELL. AND SO HOW DO WE MEASURE THAT FOR THIS INDICATOR? YOU CAN STILL DO IT WITH THE TSAI. IT STILL MEASURES READING AND WRITING. AND SO WHAT I'M SAYING IS DON'T THINK OF IT JUST AS A ROUTE TO COLLEGE. WHICHEVER WAY THESE STUDENTS GO, THEY STILL NEED THAT SKILL SET IN ORDER TO ASCEND AND DO WELL BASED ON WHAT ROUTE THEY CHOOSE. BUT I'M SORRY, THERE IS ALSO OBVIOUSLY INDUSTRY BASED CERTIFICATION. AND, YOU KNOW, WE'RE ALREADY LOOKING AT, I MEAN, WE OFFER ALREADY A VARIETY OF OPTIONS. I MEAN, I THINK, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE KIDS WHEN IT COMES TO CTE, BUT WE ARE CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR OTHERS AND WE'RE [01:50:03] ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WHAT OTHER PARTNERSHIP WE CAN HAVE, WHETHER WITH ACC, WHETHER WITH OTHER BUSINESS PARTNERS HERE TO OFFER, AGAIN, MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEM. I KNOW WE'RE ALSO LOOKING AT A P-TECH OPTIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS IN THE FUTURE. IT MAY TAKE ABOUT TWO YEARS TO GO THROUGH ACCREDITATION BUT THAT'S ALMOST HAVE AND SOMETIMES THEY DON'T HAVE TO. THEY CAN EARN SOME TYPE OF INDUSTRY CERTIFICATION, EVEN GET AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE WHILE THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL. SO TECHNICALLY AT 18 THEY COULD HAVE IT. AND WITHOUT LEAVING, LET'S SAY ROUND ROCK HIGH SCHOOL OR CEDAR RIDGE, YOU COULD, THEY COULD DO THOSE KIND OF THINGS WHILE THEY ARE AND THE COMPREHENSIVE ONE OF OUR COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS. SO WE ALREADY LOOKING AT THINGS LIKE THAT TO ADD TO OUR PORTFOLIO. RIGHT. BUT WE HAVE TO CONSTANTLY LOOK FOR OPTIONS FOR OUR KIDS. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WITH THAT INDUSTRY BASED CERTIFICATION, THEY WILL BE OPPORTUNITY FOR GOOD PAYING JOB FOR ANY STUDENTS WHO DECIDE NOT TO GO TO COLLEGE. SO IT HAS TO, WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER, I GUESS, TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. TRUSTEE HARRISON. LIKE I STILL DON'T FEEL, LIKE IS THAT, IS CTE SHIFTING A FOCUS FROM COLLEGE CAREER AND MILITARY READINESS TO VALUING COLLEGE PERSISTENCE MORE? BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE A SHIFT. LIKE FOR A WHILE WE WERE TALKING ABOUT TRADES AND INDUSTRY AND NOW IT'S JUST LIKE, OKAY, COLLEGE PERSISTENCE. COLLEGE IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE AND SOMETIMES EVEN EXPENSIVE TO THE POINT OF BEING PREDATORY RIGHT NOW, TOO. SO WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ACHIEVEMENT GAPS, SO WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE STUDENTS THAT GET LEFT BEHIND BLACK, BROWN, ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED SPECIAL EDUCATION, 504, DYSLEXIA. WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE ALL OF THOSE STUDENT GROUPS? AND PERHAPS WHAT I'M REALIZING IN HEARING YOU TALK, PRESIDENT LANDRUM, IT'S GOING TO TAKE SOME PRACTICE, IS THAT OUR ADVOCACY LIKE THIS IS NOT ROUND ROCK ISD, THIS IS TEA. FEEDBACK. AND I THINK THAT I UNDERSTAND THAT BECAUSE I'M A CTE TEACHER AND I'M AN EDUCATOR. ARE PARENTS REALLY GOING TO CARE IF WE GET A POINT ON OUR CCMR FOR THEIR SCHOOL OR I MEAN, THEY CARE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO THEIR STUDENT. YES. SO IT IS A SYSTEM, IT'S A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM FOR SURE, BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE ALMOST A MONEY GRAB TO SOME SOME COLLEGES IN THAT ONCE WHEN A KID DOESN'T MAKE IT OUT, I MEAN HE COULD GO TO COLLEGE. IF THEY DECIDE TO GO AND REALLY START A CAREER AT 18 OR THEN WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY SELECT ONE OF THOSE CAREERS THAT THEY LIKE AND MAYBE GO THROUGH THE PATHWAY TO GET THAT INDUSTRY CERTIFICATION, FOR EXAMPLE, SO THEY CAN START GO TO THE WORKFORCE. AND IF THEY DECIDE TO GO AND SERVE OUR COUNTRY, WE ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ALSO QUIT BECAUSE THEY STILL HAVE TO PASS CERTAIN TESTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. RIGHT. SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE READY AND THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL IN SERVING OUR COUNTRY. SO OUR JOB IS REALLY TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE SUCCESSFUL WITH US. SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE AGAIN THAT THEY LOVE WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND THEY WANT TO STICK TO IT AND GET IT DONE. BUT ALSO WHEN I'M SURE AGAIN, THEN WHEN IF THEY DECIDE TO GO TO THE CAREER THAT CERTIFICATION AGAIN, THEY CAN EARN A GOOD, GOOD WAGE SO THEY CAN RAISE A FAMILY AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILY. RIGHT.
